LEADIN:
New traffic laws have come into force in Lebanon this week.
Authorities hope they will help reduce the number of accidents in the country, which has around one million cars on the road.
Drivers in Beirut have been giving the new rules the green light.
STORYLINE:
Beirut's rush hour is being shaken up.
Traffic officers are out on the streets of handing out leaflets explaining new traffic laws.
The long awaited changes have been rolled out this week - with the hope they will help to reduce accidents on the country's roads.
Every driver is now given a 12 point licence, with points being deducted for any driving violations committed.
The amount in fines drivers have to pay has also been changed as part of the overhaul.
The fines range between 50,000 Lebanese pounds (33 US Dollars) and 3,000,000 Lebanese pounds (2,000 US dollars), depending on the violation.
And prison sentences can be handed down to the most serious of violations - including driving without a licence or fleeing the scene of an accident.
In sharp contrast to just last week, most motorists have their seatbelts fastened and those on motorcycles are wearing helmets.
And under the close watch of policemen, drivers are complying with traffic lights.
Captain Eddy Karwaji says they've been getting a good response from motorists.
"We were surprised to find complete commitment, more than we expected. Everyone is wearing seat belts and people are afraid (of getting caught without them). They are stopping at the red light. They are complying more than we were expecting."
Driver Khudar Hammoud, who was stopped by police handing out leaflets on his way to work, agrees.

LEADIN:
Several unions in Lebanon organized a protest in Beirut to block a parliamentary session that was supposed to discuss the draft law on capital controls, which would limit how much bank depositors can withdraw from their savings.
STORYLINE:
Members of different unions in Lebanon along with bank depositors protested once again in downtown Beirut on Tuesday to block the parliament from convening over the draft capital control law.
The proposed law would limit how much bank depositors can withdraw from their savings.
Lawyers, dentists, nurses and engineers took part in the protest, rallying in front of the parliament building in the Lebanese capital.
Presidents of the unions opposed the proposed law and warned they would resort to strikes if it passes.
Lebanon is in the grip of a severe economic crisis that was described by the World Bank as one of the worst the world has witnessed since the 1850s.
Last month, the government approved a capital control law that was rejected in parliament.
A new draft was supposed to be discussed by a parliamentary committee ahead of a vote.
